Dunkley Wood

By Keith McDonald

Also known as the 'Old Place', this former home of the elves was the nesting site for Ariadne in Series 4.

In Series 4, dungeoneers wishing to reach Level 3 had to pass through Dunkley Wood.

The elves know it by a name which roughly translates as 'the Old Place'. There was still an 'elf path' through the wood, if teams were able to find it.

However, since the elves left, the place became overrun with wolves and Ariadne has built her lair across it.

Dunkley Wood, as seen in Series 4 of Knightmare (1990)

The passage through the wood involves an Eye Shield sequence across a patch of open ground before reaching the outskirts of Ariadne's Lair.

Teams also occasionally found an additional clearing, where they might encounter the tavern monk, Brother Mace. One team must persuade the monk to drink a bottle of green liquid which turns him into a lizard.

The area is thought to be based on Hockering Wood in East Dereham, Norfolk.

There is an elf path - there's always an elf path - but it won't be easy to find...
