Smirkenorff Flights

By Keith McDonald

Flights on Smirkenorff, created using helicopter footage in castles and villages around England and Wales, were a memorable part of the show.

Smirkenorff the Dragon provided a more dramatic way for players to travel throughout the dungeon.

When first introduced in Series 5, teams might take a flight at the very start of a quest. However, the dragon was more commonly used to travel from Level 1 to Level 2.

Smirkenorff was operated by Mark Cordory's company, Talismen, over footage captured by a helicopter from Helifilms.

Among the locations used was Carreg Cennen Castle and Llanstaffan Castle in South Wales. This provided footage that passed over the sea by the Tywi Estuary for dramatic effect.

In Series 7, Helifilms footage transferred to CGI for the Rift of Angar, the threshold for Level 2.

Smirkenorff retired to a nesting lair in Series 8, and was no longer used for flights between levels.
