Series 1 Quest 5. Helen is watched by a suspicious Giant as she enters his lair.

The Giant

By Keith McDonald

The giant occupied a ridge in Level 1 and wasn't keen on being disturbed by dungeoneers.

The giant occupied a deep pit in a cave the first series. He shows indifference to dungeoneers in his few appearances.

I don't like dwarves.

Giant

The giant was barely a threat to teams - more apathetic to their presence. He claims the dungeoneers remind him of dwarves, which he doesn't like. He wants to be left in peace to rest.

The giant, played by Edmund Dehn in Series 1 of Knightmare (1987).

Treguard warns of their bad breath. But it is the giant's threat to sneeze which is a bigger concern for teams. One team suggests the giant should hold its nose.

Clearly the sight of a 'giant' was enough to encourage teams not to hang around. This caused some tricky issues for filming. Edmund Dehn recalls:

We were filming me at one end of the building and the dungeoneer at the other on a different camera, as I was supposed to be big enough to eat him! When I started to talk, the dungeoneer just kept on walking and was nearly out of my room before I'd asked my question. I was not quick enough to improvise something to stop him in my 'giant' voice. That was the only time with me that they ever had to do a second take with the dungeoneer - something they tried to avoid as the spontaneity might go.
